Uruguay have become the latest nation to name their squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with the two time winners looking to roll back the years.
Legendary manager Marcelo Bielsa will lead Uruguay into the World Cup with hopes of putting the group stage exit of 2022 behind them.
There are several names in the Uruguay squad that will be very well-known to fans of English football, with Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur and Darwin Nunez all among those to make the cut. However, there is no place for legendary striker Luis Suarez.

This is the first time that Uruguay will head to the World Cup without either Edinson Cavani or Luis Suarez since 2002.
Attempting to fill that goalscoring void are ex-Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez and Flamengo winger Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who have 13 international goals each, but are the only Uruguay players in double figures.
But that doesn’t mean they lack star power, with Federico Valverde the biggest name in the squad. The Real Madrid man is joined by the massively experienced Fernando Muslera, Jose Maria Gimenez and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Three players to look out for this summer
Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)
If Uruguay are to go deep in this summer’s tournament, Federico Valverde simply must bring his best form.
The midfielder is massively versatile, able to play through the middle and out wide, and he’s been one of Real Madrid’s best players over the last few years — registering nine goals and 13 assists across all competitions this season alone.
Valverde often wears the captain’s armband for Uruguay nowadays, and has scored against the likes of England and Brazil over the last 18 months.
Darwin Nunez (Al Hilal)
With Cavani and Suarez now a thing of the past, Darwin Nunez must shoulder the goalscoring burden for Uruguay.
He may have been wasteful at Liverpool, but Nunez boasts a solid international record, scoring 13 goals in 38 caps so far. The 26-year-old is also heading into the tournament fresh from registering 14 direct goal involvements (9G/5A) in his first 24 outings as an Al-Hilal player.
Manuel Ugarte (Manchester United)
Given his struggles for Manchester United, Manuel Ugarte’s place was not guaranteed in this squad.
However, at his best, the former Sporting CP man offers incredible dynamism and bite to the Uruguay midfield, and he could provide the perfect platform to allow Valverde and Bentancur to do their work further forward.
Ugarte will have a big point to prove this summer.
