In what will go down as a classic match of the 2026 World Cup, Cape Verde shocked the odds to earn another point against a former winner in Uruguay. Get the Cape Verde vs Uruguay result, stats and highlights here.
Uruguay started strongly and arguably should’ve taken the lead through Federico Valverde, but the skipper dragged his shot wide of the post
Cape Verde though adopted a more attacking approach than they did against Spain and it looked like paying dividends when they took the lead in the 22nd minute.
Kevin Pina’s long-range free kick put the Blue Sharks in a shock lead, making history with Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup goal – sparking jubilant scenes from the travelling African support.
Uruguay found the equaliser from a bit of chaos. Diney Borges headed a deep cross onto his own post but it rebounded out to Maxi Araujo who couldn’t miss with a diving header into the empty goal from just a yard or so out.
And somehow they found themselves ahead before the break. Araujo turned the provider this time, heading Manuel Ugarte’s cross into the path of Agustin Canobbio who coolly volleyed in from close range.
Anyone who thought that the underdogs would fade in the second half though were in for yet another shock. On the hour mark, they were level again. Mathias Olivera’s miscued backpass left Fernando Muslera in no-mans land and substitute Helio Varela pounced brilliantly to beat the goalkeeper and finish into the empty net.
From there, it was a consistent stream of pressure on the Cape Verde goal. Araujo had a goal disallowed. Rodrigo Bentancur had a header deflected wide. Valverde flashed a free-kick just over the bar.
It didn’t stop there. Valverde couldn’t quite get to a low cross from Darwin Nunez that fizzed across the six yard box. Canobbio raced through but blazed his shot over the bar. The final chances actually game for Cape Verde, but they couldn’t find the breakthrough in what was a breathless final eight minutes of injury time.
Both teams find themselves on two points after two games but Cape Verde have the kinder final fixture against Egypt, while Uruguay will have to find something against Spain in their third group game.
