Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Alex Baena as they progressed through to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup as Group H winners, while Uruguay crashed out of the tournament.
Spain were held to a shock goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opening game, but have since bounced back with consecutive wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to progress through to the last-32, where they will place the runners-up of Group J (either Austria or Algeria).
As for two-time winners Uruguay, they have now exited in the group stages of back-to-back World Cups following a hugely disappointing tournament under veteran manager Marcelo Bielsa, who failed to win a single game following draws to Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, then this defeat to Spain.
The only goal of the game came in the 42nd minute when Uruguay’s legendary goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to keep out a Alex Baena strike, which proved to be a costly mistake.
The keeper was then subbed at half-time and Biels’a men were unable to get back into the game, with midfielder Agustin Canobbio sent-off in injury time for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi.
