The Netherlands secured top spot in Group F at the 2026 World Cup by beating Tunisia 1-3 in Kansas City.
Two early goals from put the Netherlands two up inside ten minutes and despite a fightback from the African side in the second-half, Jan Paul van Hecke’s header put the game beyond doubt for Oranje.
It took just two minutes for the Netherlands to take the lead. Denzel Dumfries fired a low cross into the box and Ellyes Skhiri became the twelfth player to score an own goal at the tournament as he sliced his clearance past the hapless Aymen Dahmen.
Before the seven minute mark, it was 2-0 and Tunisia were sinking without a trace. Virgil van Dijk headed Tijjani Reijnders free-kick across the box and Brian Brobbey half-volleyed in his third goal of the tournament.
Tunisia showed some fight just as the game started to get away from them. The best of a handful of chances fell to Anis Ben Slimane, but his header was straight at Bart Verbruggen.
After the break, the Eagles of Carthage were able to pull themselves back into the game. Hazem Mastouri rose highest to head in Hannibal Mejbri’s corner.
The hope didn’t last long however. Jan Paul van Hecke was the next Dutch player to get his name on the scoresheet, his glancing header from Reijnders corner taking a deflection off the unfortunate Ben Slimane on it’s way in.
Oranje came so close to getting a fourth in a majestic manner when Reijnders lobbed effort rebounded off the bar.
Thought Tunisia looked beaten by now, they kept pushing to restore some pride. Achouri wanted a penalty for a shirt-pull while Hannibal’s effort from outside the box was pushed over the bar by Verbruggen.
