Ayase Ueda played a starring role as Japan confirmed Tunisia’s premature elimination from the World Cup following a 4-0 rout in Monterrey.
The Feyenoord forward scored twice and provided an assist for Junya Ito – becoming the first Japanese player to do so in a single match at the tournament – while Daichi Kamada was also on target for the Samurai Blue.
Just four minutes had elapsed when Japan hit the front, as Keito Nakamura’s low cross was turned in by Kamada.
Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen made a superb save to deny Takehiro Tomiyasu on the line, but was helpless as Ueda doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a wonderful 20-yard drive into the bottom corner.
After Ao Tanaka drilled narrowly wide from distance, Ueda turned provider on 69 minutes with a clever flick to release Ito, who subsequently slid home through the goalkeeper’s legs.
Ueda had the final word seven minutes from time, beating Dahmen with a looping header from Kaishu Sano’s cross.
Japan became the first Asian country to score four times in a World Cup match, while Tunisia’s dismal campaign – which saw them replace head coach Sabri Lamouchi with Herve Renard following their opening 5-1 defeat by Sweden – ended with a whimper.
