In a slow first-half, Colombia looked dangerous in playing through the midfield but struggled to find the final pass in front of goal.
Switzerland had a couple of quickfire chances. One came from some excellent persistence from Fabian Rieder who battled his way into a shooting position before eventually drawing a save from Camilo Vargas with his left-footed strike. Ndoye’s low effort from the same side of the box drew another good stop from the Colombian keeper.
Nati had a great chance in the opening stages of the second half but Djibril Sow, having only just entered the fray, slipped when attempting to turn Ndoye’s cross goalwards.
Although a lack of cutting edge in front of goal remain in the second half the intensity certainly ramped up in terms of intensity with three yellow cards being shown in the first 15 minutes after the break.
Chances remained few and far between and extra-time seemed inevitable, despite a few scuffed long-range efforts and loose penalty claims. Ndoye flashed a cross-shot through the six yard box in injury-time.
Once we finally did get into extra-time, Colombia seemed to find a new lease of life. Jhon Lucumi came closest of any player in the game so far to break the deadline on 98 minutes when he crashed his close-range header against the crossbar. Jaminton Campaz also forced an unorthodox save from Gregor Kobel with a long-range header.
Switzerland weren’t without their chances though as the game opened up more in the extra period. Zeki Amdouni who had only just come off the bench and managed to wriggle free of a few Colombian challenges before having his shot parried away by Vargas.
Campaz was presented with a golden opportunity with time ticking away as Daniel Munoz pounced on some defensive uncertainty and headed it into his path, but the Rosario Central man lifted his effort over the bar when he really should’ve won the game for Cafeteros.
Penalties felt like the natural way to separate these two. Davinson Sanchez, the Colombia skipper, was first to miss with his team’s second kick. Amdouni took advantage to put Nati a goal to the good after two penalties each.
However, when Manuel Akanji ballooned his effort over the bar, the teams were level at 2-2 after three penalties each. Hernandez followed that up with another miss and Switzerland again gained the advantage as Cedric Itten converted. Vargas was able to convert his final penalty to send Murat Yakin and
