World Cup 2026 co-hosts Canada progressed to the Round of 16 in dramatic circumstances thanks to an injury-time winner from Stephen Eustaquio in Los Angeles.
Although Canada started the brighter of the two teams, the first real attempt of note came from Teboho Mokoena of South Africa. His curling, long-range effort was easily dealt with by Canada keeper Maxime Crepeau.
Canada’s best opening before the first hydration break fell to Derek Cornelius, who found himself unmarked from a Stephen Eustaquio free-kick but couldn’t get a clean connection.
The Canucks looked for all the world like they had the lead on the stroke of a half-time, but South Africa somehow survived a dramatic melee in their own box. Aubrey Modiba was on hand to clear Moise Bombito’s header off the line before Ronwen Williams made a brave save to deny Tajon Buchanan in the follow up.
That wasn’t the end of the first-half drama either as Richie Laryea went down in the box looking for a penalty but his claims were waved away by the referee.
As we moved into the second-half, Bafana Bafana needed some heroic defending to stay level. Tani Oluwaseyi broke free and his shot was saved by Williams. The ball looked set to land perfectly for Jonathan David but with the goal gaping, Mbekezeli Mbokazi was able to respond brilliantly to clear away.
South Africa had half-chances, but it was Canada who looked most likely to score. Two substitutes combined for one chance, Alphonso Davies finally making his first appearance of the tournament finding Promise David who dragged his right-footed shot wide of the post.
Finally though in injury-time the breakthrough came and it was Eustaquio who made the difference. A nice move down the right saw a crosses headed away as far as the Canada midfielder who took one touch before hitting a half-volley past Williams and into the bottom corner.
