Panama have become the latest nation to announced their 2026 World Cup squad as they bid to upset the odds in North America.
Thomas Christiansen, who has a wealth of experience as both a player and manager across Europe, will lead Panama into the World Cup, as they try and navigate their way through a tough looking group.
There aren’t many names that will be too familiar to fans of English football but the likes of Fidel Escobar, Eric Davis and Anibal Godoy did feature when Panama met England at the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russia.

Unsurprisingly, Panama have decided to stick with many of the players that have helped to improve their fortunes as a footballing nation in the last decade but as a result, they’ll have one of oldest squads at this summer’s tournament.
No fewer than 50% of this 26 man squad is aged 30 or over, with five players including skipper Anibal Godoy being 35 and over. There will be flashes of quality, but in all honesty it’s going to be a slog for this Panama squad to cope with the likes of England and Croatia in the group stages this summer.

Three players to look out for this summer
Anibal Godoy (San Diego)
Although very much the elder statesman of this Panama squad, captain Anibal Godoy brings a huge amount of international experience and leadership to the heart of Thomas Christiansen’s midfield. The veteran has been a key figure for Los Canaleros for more than a decade and is now his nation’s highest all-time appearance holder with 159.
The 36 year old is not the most glamorous player in this squad but his influence is enormous. Combative out of possession and calm in possession, Godoy has the ability to slow matches down, disrupt the opposition and provide the defensive platform for Panama’s more attacking players to thrive at this summer’s World Cup.
Amir Murillo (Besiktas)
Probably the player in this Panama squad with the most experience of elite European football having spent time with Anderlecht and Marseille before joining Besiktas earlier this year, Amir Murillo will add some much needed attacking impetus even from wing-back at this summer’s World Cup.
The 30 year old is one of the most athletic members of this squad and possesses genuine quality in the attacking areas as well as being a more than capable defender. He’s also capable of popping up with an important goal having scored nine times in his 91 international caps for los Canaleros thus far.
Ismael Diaz (Leon)
Another player from Liga MX, if Panama are to have any kind of attacking outlet at this summer’s tournament it will more than likely from come Ismael Diaz. The Leon forward has developed into a hugely important figure for Los Canaleros in recent years and is capable of producing moments of quality even against stronger opponents.
The 28 year old possesses real acceleration in the final third and will look to prove a threat in behind opposition defences on the counter-attack. With Panama unlikely to dominate possession against the likes of England and Croatia, Díaz’s ability to turn defences around and generate scoring opportunities could prove crucial.
