England did enough to get over the line against Panama but there were still plenty of concerns over the performance in the 2-0 victory.
The first half was a tough watch, with the Three Lions really struggling against the Panama low block. It was a very similar story to the Ghana game and England struggled to create chances in the opening 45 minutes.
It was actually Panama that looked the more dangerous side in the first half, breaking with speed and forcing Jordan Pickford into a couple of important saves.
The second half saw Thomas Tuchel’s side begin to take more control of the game and they were eventually able to find their way through the Panamanian defence after 62 minutes. A Bukayo Saka corner wasn’t dealt with by Panama and Jude Bellingham was able to stick out a leg to poke the ball home. It was Bellingham’s second goal of the World Cup, further highlighting his importance to the side.
Five minutes later England were able to double their lead and, again, it was Bellingham that had to thank. HIs good work on the left in creating space for the cross saw him put the ball right on Harry Kane’s head. The Bayern Munich striker was able to find the net, becoming England’s highest ever scorer at the World Cup.
The rest of the game petered out without much in the way of chances for either side. It was far from a classic performance from England but the most important thing was getting the three points. That win sets up a Round of 32 tie against either DR Congo or Senegal and, crucially, keeps the Three Lions on the opposite side of the draw to the likes of Spain and France.
