Norway clung onto a narrow lead to overcome Senegal and secure a route through to the knock-out stages of the 2026 World Cup.
Erling Haaland scored twice in a 3-2 win for the Scandinavians who were able to hold on for three points despite a second-half brace from Ismaila Sarr.
Stale Solbakken’s men had the three best chances of the opening stages. Kristoffer Ajer had the first sight of goal, but his header drew a fine save from Edouard Mendy.
Following that, a nice move down the right hand side saw Martin Odegaard in space in the box, but he blazed over. The Arsenal man had another, even better chance soon after but couldn’t find a way past the onrushing Mendy.
Finally, they got the breakthrough. Marcus Pedersen, introduced for the injured Julian Ryerson, was played in on the right of the box to finish after a mistake from Kalidou Koulibaly. After making two good saves, Mendy couldn’t get enough of his body behind the full-back’s strike on this occassion.
Haaland had two chances in injury-time of the first half to extend the lead, the first he pounced on a spill from Mendy and hit the post with his shot, before drawing a save with a towering header.
When the teams did return from the break, Haaland finally got his goal. Odegaard threaded an inch-perfect pass through the Senegal backline and the Manchester City man fired the ball into the top corner first time with his left foot.
Senegal quickly found a route back into the game though. Ismailar Sarr did brilliantly to lift the ball over Orjan Nyland after forcing his way through the Norway defence to latch onto a delicate pass from Sadio Mane.
But Norway needn’t have worried and there are no prizes for guessing who got their third. Pederson’s low cross led to a scramble in the box and eventually David Moller Wolfe cut the ball back for Haaland whose volley bounced in off the crossbar for 3-1.
Pathe Ciss made an incredible goalline clearance to keep it to 3-1 when he headed Oscar Bobb’s strike over the bar in the final minute of normal time.
Sarr grabbed his second in injury-time to ensure the game would stay alive until the very last. The Crystal Palace forward was played in by Nicolas Jackson before finishing confidently with his right foot.
In the final seconds, Sarr rose highest from a corner but couldn’t direct his header goalwards, missing the chance to finish off what would’ve been a fine hat-trick to earn his nation a point.
