Jude Bellingham struck twice as England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time at Hard Rock Stadium, booking a World Cup 2026 semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland.
The quarter-final was historic before kick-off. Norway had never reached the last eight of a major tournament, while England made their 11th World Cup quarter-final appearance.
Thomas Tuchel made two changes from the 3-2 win over Mexico. John Stones replaced the suspended Jarell Quansah, with Noni Madueke in for Bukayo Saka.
Andreas Schjelderup gave Norway a 36th-minute lead against the run of play. Bellingham levelled in first-half injury time, finishing calmly from Anthony Gordon’s pass. Harry Kane then thought he had completed the turnaround, only for the flag to deny him for offside.
Norway pushed hardest after the break. Torbjorn Heggem had a 56th-minute strike ruled out by VAR for Erling Haaland’s foul in the build-up. Kristoffer Ajer then rattled the crossbar from a corner before Haaland fired the rebound into the side netting.
England settled it three minutes into extra time. Morgan Rogers’ shot was parried and Bellingham pounced, squeezing a right-footed finish under Orjan Nyland. The goalkeeper later denied Djed Spence and Saka to keep the deficit at one, but Norway could not find an equaliser.
The Three Lions reach a fourth World Cup semi-final, and a first since 2018. For Norway, a historic first quarter-final ends in heartbreak.
