Mohamed Salah played a starring role as Egypt recorded their first-ever World Cup victory, coming from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver.
The 34-year-old scored once and assisted another, becoming the oldest African player to both score and assist in a World Cup match, while Mostafa Zico and substitute Trezeguet also found the net.
New Zealand struck first on 15 minutes, as Finn Surman powered home a header from Tim Payne’s corner, catching Egypt’s defence badly unmarked.
The Pharaohs pushed for an equaliser but struggled to find their rhythm before the break, with Salah curling a free-kick wide from the edge of the area.
Egypt emerged with greater urgency after the interval. Just before the hour, Zico found space to head home Mohamed Hany’s cross and draw the sides level.
Within ten minutes, Salah exchanged passes with Zico before sweeping home in trademark fashion to give Egypt the lead for the first time.
The result was sealed on 82 minutes as Salah’s corner from the left found substitute Trezeguet, who dived to head past Max Crocombe.
Egypt top Group G and need only a draw against Iran in Seattle to advance. New Zealand, still winless in eight World Cup appearances, face Belgium in their final group match.
