South Korea came from behind to earn three vital points in their opening match at the 2026 World Cup against Czech Republic.
Ladislav Krejci had put Repre a goal to the good with his second-half header, but an inspired performance from Hwang In-beom in which he scored a delightful goal before laying on a winner for Oh Hyeon-gyu turned the scoreline on it’s head.
Hong Myung-bo’s team had the better of the opening 45 minutes, racing out of the blocks with four shots in the first quarter of an hour. Indeed Son Heung-min alone took five shots in the first half, though none of them came to anything of note.
The Taeguk Warriors drew three further saves from Matej Kovar in the early stages of the second-half and it felt like a matter of time before the Taeguk Warriors took the lead.
Then the sucker punch came. Krejci pounced on a long throw from West Ham’s Vladimir Coufal to nod Czech Republic in front with their first attempt on target.
It took only eight minutes for South Korea to get a deserved equaliser through In-beom. The Feyenoord man latched onto Lee Kang-in’s pass, cut back to sell two Czech defenders and finished with aplomb.
West Ham’s Tomas Soucek briefly thought he’d put Czech Republic ahead, but just minutes after his header was ruled out for offside, South Korea had their winner.
In-beom turned from scorer to provider, sliding an inviting ball across the box for substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu to prod home what turned out to be the winner.
