Algeria and Jordan will both be hoping to keep their 2026 World Cup dreams alive when they face on on Tuesday at 4am (UK time).
Jordan had a losing World Cup debut, beaten by Austria, but there was a moment to celebrate. Ali Olwan wrote his name into the history books shortly after half-time, scoring Jordan’s first-ever World Cup goal. That goal has Jordan third in the group, on goal difference.
But Algeria will be expecting to leapfrog their opponents with victory here. Algeria are rooted to the bottom of the group having lost their first game 3-0. They offered little by way of resistance against Argentina, though were unhappy to see Lionel Messi not sent off for a tough challenge.
These sides have met three times before, though not since 2004. They have shared the historic results, with one win each and a draw.

Jordan team news
There will have been some worries when Abdallah Nasib came off in the final 10 minutes against Austria, with injury fears. But the centre-back is available for selection, and should start as part of the back three. He’ll be joined by Mohammad Abualnadi and Yazan Al-Arab, the latter having scored an own goal in the defeat to Austria. Yazeed Abulaila will start in goal.
At the other end of the pitch, there should be an unchanged attacking trio. Al Olwan will start on the left-wing, fresh from his historic performance against Austria, which put him one step closer to becoming Jordan’s all-time top scorer. Odeh Fakhouri should start on the right, with Mousa Al-Tamaari through the middle.
Ihsan Haddad should continue as the right wing-back, and Jordan captain. There are some other midfield options but Nizar Al-Rashdan and Noor Al-Rawabdeh are the first-choice pairing. The same goes for Mohannad Abu Taha on the left, particularly with Jordan’s formation.

Algeria team news
Vladimir Petkovic has a big call to make for this game. Luca Zidane was at fault for two of Argentina’s three goals in the opening game, and there may be some calls to drop the goalkeeper. But Petkovic would do well to keep faith in Zidane, for his confidence, and due to the lack of experience in the backup options. He’ll likely form part of an unchanged defensive setup, with Ramy Bensebaini partnering Aissa Mandi as the centre-back pairing.
There may be a change further forward, though. Riyad Mahrez was a shock omission from the starting XI against Argentina, only coming on midway through the second half. Despite his age, Mahrez remains Algeria’s key player and he’ll likely replace Anis Hadj Moussa. Amine Gouiri should continue to lead the line, though, with Fares Chaibi on the left.
The midfield setup should remain the same. Ibrahim Maza will provide options to switch between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1, depending on the state of the game. The flexibility gets him in the team ahead of Houssem Aouar, who will likely start from the bench. Nabil Bentaleb and Hicham Boudaoui will join Maza in midfield, playing in more defensive roles.
