Germany were the first ‘giant’ to crash out of the 2026 World Cup after losing a penalty shootout for the first time in their history in the competition. Paraguay were the side to defeat them, winning 4-3 on penalties.
The first half saw have most of the ball, with Paraguay more content to sit back and soak up the German pressure. The European side didn’t make the most of their possession, though, failing to create a clear cut chance or even register a shot on target until stoppage time in the first half.
Germany were punished for their lack of cutting edge before the half was out. Less than five minutes before the break, Julio Enciso was allowed a free header from the second phase of a corner, putting Paraguay into the lead. It was one they were able to hold onto heading into half time, leaving Germany chasing the game.
The second half saw German increase the tempo and they played with more impetus. It look less than 10 minutes from the restart from them to make this count, Kai Havertz’s flicked header finding the corner of the net to restore parity.
Despite plenty of pressure following the goal, Germany were unable to find a second goal and the 90 minutes gave way to extra-time.
The first half of extra time continued in a similar pattern. Germany dominated the ball but were mainly restricted to holding the ball outside the area. Jonathan Tah thought he had given Germany the lead just before the break but VAR adjudged Orlando Gill to have been fouled at a corner. It looked to be a soft decision but the goal was ruled out.
The second period didn’t have much in the way of goalmouth action, instead it turned into an ill-tempered affair that ended with the game heading to penalties.
The shootout went the way of Gill, who saved two spotkicks as Paraguay went on to win. Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah were the German players to miss their penalties, with Jose Canale scoring the winning penalty for Paraguay.
