France produced another statement performance at World Cup 2026 as Didier Deschamps’ side swept Sweden aside 3-0 to reach the last 16 in convincing fashion.
Les Bleus dominated from the opening whistle but had to wait until the closing moments of the first half to make their superiority count. Bradley Barcola threatened with a brilliant solo run before Kylian Mbappe saw a goal ruled out for a marginal offside. Mbappe also struck the post, while Michael Olise’s spectacular overhead kick crashed against the woodwork as France piled on the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before the interval. Mbappe created space with quick footwork inside the penalty area before curling an excellent finish into the far corner for his fifth goal of the tournament.
France doubled their lead eight minutes after the restart when Olise slipped Barcola through on goal and the Paris Saint-Germain forward blasted past Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. Mbappe then wrapped up the victory in familiar fashion, timing his run perfectly to meet another defence-splitting Olise pass before calmly slotting home his second of the afternoon.
Sweden rarely threatened, although Viktor Gyokeres squandered their best opportunity late on. France, meanwhile, looked clinical throughout and rarely allowed their opponents into the game. The result sends Deschamps’ side into the last 16 full of confidence, with Paraguay awaiting after another ruthless display.
