England suffered World Cup semi-final heartbreak as Argentina struck twice in the closing stages to complete a dramatic 2-1 comeback and secure their place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared destined for Atlanta after Anthony Gordon opened the scoring shortly after half-time, but the reigning world champions once again demonstrated their elite mentality by turning the tie around when it mattered most.
A tense opening period saw both sides struggle to create clear chances, with midfield battles and defensive discipline dominating proceedings. England eventually found the breakthrough in the 55th minute when Morgan Rogers surged down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross, allowing Gordon to fire home a composed first-time finish.
However, England gradually dropped deeper and allowed Argentina to take control of possession, with Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez beginning to dictate the tempo. Their pressure finally told five minutes from time as Fernandez produced a stunning curling effort that left Jordan Pickford helpless and brought the scores level.
Just when extra time looked inevitable, Argentina delivered a decisive final blow. Messi found space before whipping in a dangerous cross, which Lautaro Martinez met with a powerful header deep into stoppage time to complete a dramatic turnaround.
The victory sends Argentina through to another World Cup final, where they will face Spain, while England are left to reflect on another painful near miss as their wait for a major tournament triumph extends beyond 60 years.
