Ecuador have become the latest nation to name their 2026 World Cup squad as the South American nation looks to make an impact in North America.
Sebastian Beccacece is the man in charge of Ecuador with the Argentinian taking charge in 2024 and overseeing a run of just one loss in 18 games, so far.
There aren’t many players that catch the eye for Ecuador but fans of English football will be familiar with Moises Caicedo of Chelsea and Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie while Pervis Estupinan and Willian Pacho are well-established names in European football.

It’s fair to say that this looks like Ecuador’s ‘Golden Generation’. While Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho provide defensive stability unseen in many Ecuador squads of the past, Moises Caicedo is one of the most well-rounded midfielders in world football right now.
There’s a youthful exuberance to this squad too, with no fewer than seven players aged under 23 included in Sebastian Beccacece’s squad. 19 year old Kendry Paez of Chelsea could be the most likely one of those seven to start, having already racked up 25 caps for his country.
This squad seems well balanced and Ecuador will be very difficult to break down this summer – as they showcased in qualifying by keeping 13 clean sheets in 18 matches. Are they this summer’s dark horses?

Three players to look out for this summer
Moises Caicedo (Chelsea)
The beating heart of this Ecuador team is Moises Caicedo, who remarkably has already reached the 60 cap mark for his country despite only being 24 years old. An excellent ball-winner, capable of progressing quickly with the ball and finding defence-splitting passes, he is an absolute whirlwind of a midfielder and La Tri will look to him both in and out of possession in this summer’s tournament.
With his relentless energy and tactical intelligence, no opposition midfielders will be looking forward to going up against Caicedo this summer and having established himself as one of the Premier League’s stand-out midfielders, he’ll now be out to do the same on the international stage. His influence will be crucial if Ecuador are to live up to that dark horse tag in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Piero Hincapie (Arsenal)
At the back, Piero Hincapie has developed into one of South America’s finest defenders and will be central to Ecuador’s hopes of making a deep run. Comfortable at either centre-back or left-back, the Arsenal defender will expect to start centrally for his country and partner Willian Pacho – who he faced as an opponent in the Champions League final just a day before the announcement of this World Cup squad.
Aggressive out of possession and composed in possession, Hincapie’s ball-playing helps Ecuador to build attacks from the back but equally important this summer will be his pace along with his ability to spot danger and react to it, allowing Ecuador to hold a high line. Together with Pacho he forms a genuinely world class centre-back partnership. Underestimate them at your peril.
Enner Valencia (Pachuca)
It’s almost 10 years since Enner Valencia’s time in the Premier League with West Ham United and Everton came to an end and now aged 36, he doesn’t quite have the explosive element of his game that once made him such an obvious goal threat. However, that explosiveness has been replaced with game intelligence and experience and with 49 goals from 105 caps he has always been consistently lethal for his country.
While Ecuador’s exciting young core has understandably attracted much of the attention heading into the tournament, Valencia remains the man they will turn to when the pressure is at its greatest. As captain, record goalscorer and one of the most experienced players in the squad, his leadership and composure could be invaluable in the knockout stages. If Ecuador are to make the deepest World Cup run in their history, few would be surprised if Valencia once again delivered the goals that make the difference.
