Czech Republic start with real purpose and before South Africa had felt their way into the game, the European side went one up. A long throw from the right caused chaos among the Bafana Bafana backline and the ball was eventually threaded by Alexandr Sojka through to Michal Sadilek, who finished well with his left foot.
South Africa slowly grew into the game, but with the lead the Czech Republic looked comfortable and limited to their opponents to very few chances in the first-half.
Their best moment came on the stroke of half-time when Matej Kovar spilled the ball to Thapelo Maseko, but Ladislav Krejci was on hand to block the winger’s effort on goal.
Hugo Broos made some changes to try and bring his side back into the game for the second-half. However, it was Czech Republic who had the first chancse of the half, Vladimir Darida’s shot being blocked, Lukas Cerv’s follow up effort drawing a save from Ronwen Williams and Patrik Schick heading straight at the South African keeper.
As it seemed the game and indeed the World Cup campaign was starting to get away from South Africa, they won a penalty from nowhere. Maseko’s shot smashed into the left arm of Czech Republic substitute Pavel Sulc and referee Tori Penso pointed to the spot.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up and slammed the spot-kick into the bottom left corner to haul Bafana Bafana back onto level terms. They almost completed a South Korea-esque turnaround a few moments later when Relebohile Mofokeng’s long-range strike drew another save from Kovar.
Both teams had half-chances in injury-time, Lukas Provod dragged a left-footed shot wide of the post while Aubrey Modiba had a mishit attempt blocked.
A draw doesn’t suit either side, with both teams now knowing they more than likely need to win their final group stage game to stand any real chance of progressing to the knock-out stages.
