Canada romped to their first ever World Cup win in emphatic style, winning 6-0 against a Qatar side that ended the game with nine men in Vancouver.
A Jonathan David hat-trick was the inspiration, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also got in on the act.
With a vociferous home crowd behind them, Canada started strongly. Jonathan David had the first real sight of goal but his low right-footed volley was beaten away by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.
The crowd didn’t have to wait too long to see their team take the lead however and it was that man Cyle Larin on the scoresheet again. The 31 year old, in from the start this time, was first to respond to a loose ball after David’s strike was spilled by Abunada.
After the first-half hydration break, David was on hand again to double Canada’s lead. The Juventus man pounced after Tajon Buchanan’s effort was blocked to volley in at the near post and put the Canucks firmly in the driving seat.
Things went from bad to worse for Qatar just moments later. Homam El Amin was sent off for bringing down Tajon Buchanan on the edge of the box. The referee original had originally given a penalty and a yellow card, but overturned that to a free-kick and red card on the advice of the VAR.
Canada were having fun at this point and Buchanan had a fine chance to make it three, but he slipped as attempting to connect with a cross and his tame effort was cleared off the line by makeshift left-back Akram Afif.
The third came before the break. Larin met a cross from Alistair Johnston with a powerful header that was palmed away by Abunada but only into the path of David, who bundled in his second.
Qatar found themselves down to nine men a few minutes into the second half when Assim Madibo was dismissed for a challenge that saw Ismael Kone stretchered off.
Substitute Nathan Saliba made it four with a right-footed free-kick that curled round the wall and bounce in off the right-hand post.
As if Canada needed any help, the fifth came via a huge error from Mohammad Al Manai who attempted to clear Jacob Shaffelburg’s effort but only succeeded in slicing the ball into his own goal.
Jonathan David eventually got his hat-trick goal, slamming in his third with his left foot after swivelling on an impressive first-touch. That put the finishing touch on an emphatic Canada performance and win – their first ever on the World Cup stage.
