Brazil bounced back from their opening match draw with Morocco by cruising to a 3-0 win over Haiti in Philadelphia in a result that ensured the Blue Sharks became the first team to be knocked out of the tournament.
A Matheus Cunha brace, plus a goal from Vinicius Junior While Haiti offered a threat on the break, Brazil had the better of the opening exchanges and thought they’d taken the lead through Raphinha, only for the offside flag to rule out his well-taken goal.
The Barcelona forward was played through again moments later and may have been offside again. It didn’t matter, as his lofted finish bounced wide of the post regardless.
In the end it wasn’t Raphinha who got the opener but Matheus Cunha in fortunate circumstances. Vinicius Junior’s attempt was pushed back out and Hannes Delcroix could only clear the ball against the Manchester United man and the ball rebounded into the goal.
In the blink of an eye, one became two. Vinicius broke from midfield and opted to play a reverse pass into Matheus Cunha who took one touch before lashing the ball in at the near post for 2-0.
In injury-time of the first-half, Vinicius got in on the act himself. Lucas Paqueta played a lovely weighted pass over the defence for the Real Madrid man to race onto and slide past Haiti goalkeeper Johnny Placide.
Wilson Isidor was introduced from the bench for Haiti at half-time and he was presented an opportunity by a poor backpass from Danilo, but the Sunderland striker couldn’t get his shot through a forest of Brazilian legs.
While Brazil sought control, the Blue Sharks sought a way back in. Ricardo Ade’s header was well saved by Allisson before Gabriel cleared acrobatically off the line.
The Selecao almost had a spectacular fourth when Gabriel Martinelli latched onto Vinicius Junior’s delicate flick and curled an effort towards the top corner only to see Placide tip the ball onto the bar.
Ederson and Endrick had further chances late on, while Dominique Simon tested Allisson, but by this point the game was dead. Brazil will march on whereas Haiti, after meeting Morocco, are heading home.
