An Erling Haaland brace helped Norway to a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a round of 16 clash that burst into life in the closing stages.
A slow-burner of a game, Haaland finally put Landslaget ahead with a powerful header 12 minutes from time and a long-range left-footed strike was enough to put the game beyond doubt despite a consolatory Neymar penalty in stoppage time.
Norway briefly thought they’d taken the lead within three minutes when Patrick Berg pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire into the top-right corner, only to see the offside flag raised.
Brazil had a glorious chance to take the lead after 10 minutes when Matheus Cunha was brought down by Kristoffer Ajer and after a VAR review, the spot-kick was given. Bruno Guimaraes stepped up but his low penalty was brilliantly saved by Orjan Nyland down to his left side.
Although it was an even first-half, Brazil had more of the ball without creating too many big opportunities. Their best chance since the penalty fell to Vinicius Junior on the left side of the box, but Ryland was able to stop the Real Madrid man’s strike with his right foot.
An even better chance fell to Martin Odegaard in first-half stoppage time as the ball broke free to him following a Gabriel Magalhaes tackle on Erling Haaland – but Alisson Becker was quick off his line to prevent the Norwegian skipper from giving his side the lead.
In the second half, Carlo Ancelotti turned to Endrick from the bench and he very nearly had a dramatic, immediate impact as he was played in by a perfectly weighted Vinicius pass but the 19 year old prodded his shot wide of the post.
As extra-time started to look like a real possibility, up stepped Erling Haaland. Andreas Schjelderup stood up an inch-perfect cross and the Manchester City man was able to outmuscle his Premier League rival Gabriel to rise and power home an unstoppable header.
Brazil had just ten minutes left to save their campaign and almost found an equaliser in bizarre circumstances as a tackle from Ajer saw the ball fly towards his own top corner but Nyland pulled off a stunning stop to keep his side in the lead.
But Haaland all but confirmed Brazil’s exit in the final minute of normal time. Taking one touch and drilling a perfectly placed sleft-footed strike from the edge of the box beyond Alisson and into the bottom corner.
Deep into stoppage time, Neymar converted a penalty kick after a foul by Leo Ostigard on Casemiro but it was too little too late for Brazil.
This was Norway’s first ever win over Brazil and puts them into the quarter finals for the first time in their history.
