Despite trailing by two goals with just five minutes of normal time remaining, Belgium were able to produce a stunning comeback to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra-time in the round of 16.
The African side raced into a deserved two goal lead thanks to goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr before a late double salvo from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans took the game into extra-time and Tielemans held is nerve from the penalty spot to send the Red Devils through.
Senegal started the brighter of the two teams and could arguably have been out of sight by half-time having dominated proceedings before the break.
The first real moment of note came via a cross from the left which Thibaut Courtois spilled onto the onrushing Ismaila Sarr who couldn’t quite get himself into position to finish. The ball hit the woodwork and was then squeezed wide by the grounded Senegal forward.
Eventually, Senegal did get their deserved opener. After a fine passing move, Sadio Mane’s perfectly weighted, in-swinging cross found Sarr. The Crystal Palace man’s header came back off the post — but rebounded to the feet of Habib Diarra who couldn’t miss from inside the six yard box.
Maxim De Cuyper, who has racked up the shots for Belgium at this tournament, came closest to getting an equaliser before half-time. His rasping shot was met by a strong hand from Senegal keeper Mory Diaw.
After the break, Diarra was presented with a great chance to get his second when he met Mane’s low cross but the Sunderland man swept his left-footed shot wide of Courtois’ right post.
It didn’t take long for Senegal to double the lead though. Just a minute after that glaring Diarra miss, a long, searching ball from Moussa Niakhate found Sarr who brilliantly took the ball down on his chest before rocketing in a fine finish.
Belgium boss Rudi Garcia raised eyebrows by bringing off Jeremy Doku and Kevin de Bruyne. But it was a gamble that paid off. Doku’s replacement Dodi Lukebakio almost brought his team back into it with a curling a long-range left-footed strike just wide.
Finally, Belgium did get their route back into the game as time started to tick away. Thomas Meunier’s low cross found another substitute in Romelu Lukaku, whose instinctive flick gave Belgium a glimmer of hope.
Then within the blink of an eye, the Red Devils were level. Leandro Trossard dug out a cross from the left side of the box which Diaw failed to claim and Youri Tielemans rose highest to head home and send the game into extra-time and the Senegal support into a state of shock.
After a breathless end to normal time, extra-time started slowly but chances did come after the break. Bara Sapoko Ndiaye’s pull-back found Ibrahim Mbaye who flashed his effort just wide and at the other end, Lukebakio’s driven strike clipped the crossbar on it’s way over
Just as penalties seemed inevitable, Belgium were handed a huge chance out of nowhere when Lamine Camara collided into Youri Tielemans in the box and with the help of the VAR, a spot-kick was awarded.
Tielemans was able to dust himself down and coolly fire his penalty into the top right corner to complete a dramatic turnaround and send his team through to the knock-out stages in scarcely believable circumstances.
