A penalty shootout was needed to separate these two nations in a lacklustre match, with Egypt eventually running out 4-2 victors.

The entre affair was a tepid one, with neither side really able to assert much dominance over the other. Despite the early stages being quite even, Egypt were able to take the lead, Emam Ashour heading in an excellent cross from Karim Hafez.

It was a lead that Egypt held at the break, without much incident in the opening 45 minutes outside of the goal. The second period began with Egypt nearly doubling their lead but Omar Marmoush put his effort wide when he really should’ve scored.

That miss seemed to give Australia the boost they needed and they took more control of the game, eventually equalising through an own-goal from Mohamed Hany. Again the goal proved to be the only real action of the second period and extra time was soon upon us.

It would be unfair to describe the extra 30 minutes as exciting and both sides looked happy to have penalties decide their fate.

Australia missed two of their spotkicks, with Harry Souttar sending his effort well over the bar before Lucas Herrington saw his effort come back off the bar. Egypt converted all four of their penalties, with the impressive Hossam Abdelmaguid converting the decisive spotkick.
