Algeria and Austria both booked their places in the Round of 32 after sharing an unforgettable 3-3 draw in the final Group J fixture, with a dramatic stoppage-time finale ensuring both nations progressed on four points.
Austria made the brighter start and deservedly took the lead after 28 minutes, capitalising on their early pressure to move in front. Algeria struggled to create many clear openings during the first half but found the perfect response on the stroke of half-time, levelling the scores in the 45th minute to head into the break with the momentum.
Ralf Rangnick’s side regained the advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead with a well-taken finish. However, their advantage lasted only five minutes as Riyad Mahrez once again brought Algeria back into the contest, setting up a tense final half-hour with qualification still hanging in the balance.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Algeria looked to have snatched all three points when they completed the turnaround with a dramatic goal in the third minute of added time. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as Austria produced one final twist, finding an equaliser three minutes later to spark wild celebrations from their players and supporters.
The point ultimately proved enough for both sides to progress from Group J on four points. Algeria advance to face Switzerland in the Round of 32, while Austria’s reward is a mouthwatering clash with Spain after one of the most entertaining matches of the group stage.
