Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is unlikely to make sweeping changes to his starting XI. The Italian may go unchanged from last week’s 1-1 draw with Leeds.
Tottenham team news vs Chelsea
Tottenham’s injury issues are starting to ease. James Maddison made his first competitive appearance in a year last week as he came off the bench against Leeds.
Maddison is unlikely to be fit enough to start, but he’s a handy option for De Zerbi.
Guglielmo Vicario is back in training, though is unlikely to oust Antonin Kinsky between the sticks.
Striker Dominic Solanke is also close to a return to fitness. Tuesday’s game may come too soon for the forward.
Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus are long-term absentees. Cristian Romero also misses out.
Maddison’s return
James Maddison’s return to first-team action is a huge boost for Tottenham. The 29-year-old looked bright off the bench against Leeds in his first appearance in a year.
The creative star, who suffered an ACL injury back in August, could yet play a key role for Spurs over the coming days.
De Zerbi, however, has a selection conundrum on his hands. Maddison has played a handful of minutes since his serious knee injury. There is the temptation to throw him in at the deep end.
Conversely, in a blood-and-thunder London Derby, doing so may set the England international back as he bids to return to fitness.
Regardless, in what has been a dire season for Spurs, Maddison’s availability offers a glimmer of hope that the north London side may just beat the drop.
