Manchester United and Leeds United face off in the Premier League on Monday at 8pm, with Paul Tierney appointed as the referee.
This will be just Tierney’s eighth Premier League game as a referee this season, with the official having struggled with an injury for the past year. He’s officiated across England’s top four leagues to help him in regaining fitness.
As a result, it’s no surprise that this will be his first league game in charge of either Man Utd or Leeds this season. However, he has refereed Leeds in the FA Cup this season. And he has been VAR across the campaign, coming under fire for some decisions.

What happened when Paul Tierney last refereed Leeds?
Tierney was the referee in Leeds’ FA Cup fourth round win over Birmingham City in February, with the Whites needing penalties to knockout lower-league opposition. He booked three Birmingham players, while Leeds came away without any cautions. But Leeds fans were unhappy about a more recent game involving Tierney, this time as VAR. He agreed with an on-pitch decision to not award Leeds a penalty for a clear foul by Luke O’Nien on Pascal Struijk — which was logged as a mistake — but did ask for a review on Sunderland’s penalty being awarded, which was dismissed by the referee.
