PSV Eindhoven have been one of the most impressive teams across the European leagues this season, sitting 10 points clear in the Eredivisie after winning 20 of their 22 league games.

However, they have not been quite as dominant in the Champions League, having finished runners-up behind Arsenal in Group B after losing only one of their six pool games.

The Dutch giants now face Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 after BVB topped the Group of Death, which contained PSG, Newcastle and Milan.

Malen’s return

This fixture sees Dortmund forward Donyell Malen returning to a former stomping ground. The native of Wieringen bagged 55 goals while creating 24 more across 116 116 appearances for PSV before his 2021 move to Dortmund, where he has 29 goals and 17 assists in 101 games.

He’s so far netted ten this season, including four in six in 2024. Only Niclas Füllkrug has more for BVB in 2023/24 (13).

“When I think of PSV, I don’t necessarily think of football, but also how I felt valued there as a person, how warm it was,” he told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“Many of the same people still work there, all of whom I have a bond with. This also applies to the masseur, the team leaders… We still text often. It’s nice to reconnect with those people.”

Team news

Richard Ledezma, Jaden De Guzman and CJ Egan-Riley have all been added to PSV’s squad for the knockout stages, but they will be without Guus Til through injury. At the same time, this game may also come too soon for Armel Bella-Kotchap, who is recovering from a shoulder problem.

Dortmund have bolstered their options by adding Jadon Sancho, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Ian Maatsen to their Champions League squad for this clash.

Ramy Bensebaini, Karim Adeyemi and Felix Nmecha are all set to miss out. After picking up an ankle injury, Sebastian Haller — who helped Ivory Coast win the Africa Cup of Nations — is a major doubt.

Predicted XIs for both teams

PSV Eindhoven (4-3-3): Benitez; Teze, Boscagli, Ramalho, Dest; Saibari, Schouten, Veerman; Bakayoko, De Jong, Lozano

Borussia Dortmund (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen; Can, Sabitzer; Brandt, Reus, Sancho; Fullkrug
