Andy Carroll: Newcastle United return a “dream” move

Andy Carroll has claimed he has “unfinished business” after sealing a “dream” return to Newcastle United on a free transfer.

Carroll signed a 12-month contract at St James’ Park on transfer deadline day, eight-and-a-half years after leaving for Liverpool in a £35m deal.

Carroll’s dream return: Five key things to know…

  • Carroll left Newcastle for Liverpool (£35m) in 2011.
  • But he’s struggled with injury since leaving St James’ Park.
  • Carroll has scored just 39 Premier League goals during that time.
  • Steve Bruce made him his fifth and final signing of the summer window.
  • Carroll said he has “unfinished business” upon making his “dream” return.

The 30-year-old has had huge injury struggles since initially leaving Newcastle in 2011, restricting him to just 39 league goals during that time.

But Carroll is ready to put all that behind him and insisted he always thought he would end up back at his boyhood club one day.

“Coming back is something that only dreams are made of,” he told Sky Sports News.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be back. On the way up it was just butterflies in the stomach. I couldn’t believe it really. Now it’s finally happened it’s a great feeling.

“I think there is unfinished business [for me here]. I left on a high. I want to come back and get back to where I was, scoring goals and playing games and enjoying it really.

“The minute I left Newcastle it was always in my head to come back at one point. It’s been eight-and-a-half years. I thought it would have been a lot quicker to be honest, but I’m here now and I’m ready to get started.”

Carroll was Steve Bruce’s fifth and final summer signing, joining the club alongside Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin, Jetro Willems and Emil Krafth as the post-Rafa Benitez era begins on Tyneside.

Newcastle begin their 2019/20 Premier League campaign at home to Arsenal on Sunday.
