Real Madrid begin their La Liga title defence at Mallorca on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. (UK time).

Mallorca are getting ready to compete in La Liga for the fourth consecutive season, which marks their best performance at this level of football since 2013. However, they did not have a comfortable position during the 2023/24 season. The Pirates finished 15th last season, seven points ahead of the relegation zone, and they now have a new manager, Jagoba Arrasate, who took charge after leaving Osasuna at the end of last season.

Last season, Los Blancos dominated La Liga, earning 95 points from 38 matches and finishing 10 points ahead of second-placed Barcelona. They only suffered one defeat. Ancelotti’s team also had the best offensive (87 goals) and defensive record (26 goals) in Spain’s top flight. They aim to kick off their 2024/25 La Liga campaign with a strong start this weekend, followed by matches against Real Valladolid and Las Palmas later this month.

Mallorca vs Real Madrid team news

Mallorca has made three signings this summer: Johan Mojica from Villarreal, while Takuma Asano and Mateu Morey have arrived on free transfers. The team’s biggest departure has been Predrag Rajković, with the goalkeeper making a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Javi Llabrés will be unavailable due to a muscular problem, but the home side is otherwise in strong shape for their opening match of the new campaign. Arrasate is expected to implement a three-man defence this season, with Mojica, who was on loan with him at Osasuna last season, set to debut for the Pirates in this game.

There could also be a start in the final third of the field for Asano alongside Vedat Muriqi, who has scored 27 times in 80 league appearances for Mallorca.

Kylian Mbappé made a successful debut for Real Madrid on Wednesday, scoring a goal in their 2-0 win over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup. Unfortunately, David Alaba is still recovering from an ACL injury and is not available for selection, but he is expected to return before the end of 2024.

Eduardo Camavinga suffered a knee injury in training before the UEFA Super Cup and will be out of action for at least six weeks. However, there were no new injury concerns from the Atalanta match, so head coach Carlo Ancelotti will likely field the same starting lineup for the next game, with Vinicius Junior, Mbappé, and Rodrygo leading the attack.

Éder Militão has recovered from a knee injury and should be back in action, partnering with Antonio Rüdiger in central defence, while Jude Bellingham is expected to continue in a deeper midfield role.
