Iceland Women vs Finland Women prediction, stats, tips & team news

Women’s Euro 2025 gets underway on Wednesday 2nd July at 5pm (UK time) when Iceland Women take on Finland Women at Arena Thun. Iceland are at the Women’s European Championship for the fifth successive tournament, though they haven’t had the best luck. Finland, meanwhile, have appeared in four of the past five tournaments heading into 2025. This game will be broadcast live in the UK on ITV1.

Draw

Iceland drew all three of their games at Euro 2022. They have also drawn four of their six competitive matches in 2025. This looks to be a finely poised match between two evenly matched teams and could be one where the spoils are shared. Neither team looks significantly better than the other at this moment in time and a stalemate could be on the cards.

Under 2.5 goals

Six of Finland’s past eight competitive matches have seen two goals or fewer scored. This will also be a cagey affair, as the first game of the tournament. Neither side will want to give much away in the opening game and this could lead to a tense affair lacking in chances at either end of the pitch.

How both teams go into Iceland vs Finland

Iceland first qualified for the Women’s European Championship in 2009, and they’ve been at every tournament since. But they’ve only made it out of the group stage once. In fact, they’ve only won one of their 13 European Championship matches. That sole victory came in 2013, when they reached the quarter-finals.

Since then, it’s been three defeats and three draws. Three years ago at Euro 2022, Iceland went unbeaten with a trio of 1-1 draws in the group stage. But that wasn’t enough to stop them from finishing third in their group, bowing out. Nevertheless, Iceland have been given a decent chance of making it to the knockout stages this time around. According to Opta’s pre-tournament predictions from May, Iceland have a 29% chance of winning Group A and are 28% to finish second. A win over Finland could go some way to help them achieve the feat. However, Iceland are winless in their past 10 matches.

Finland are less fancied to qualify from Group A, expected to finished third behind Iceland and Norway. But victory over Iceland can immediately throw that out of the window. Finland reached the semi-finals in their European Championship debut in 2005, though it was only an eight-team tournament so they just needed to get out of the group. They then reached the quarter-finals on their next try, but again that was just getting out of the group.

They haven’t fared well since. Finland have lost four of their six games across Euro 2013 and Euro 2022, while failing to qualify in 2017. Three years ago, Finland finished bottom of their group with three defeats from three, scoring just one goal. They do go into the tournament unbeaten in their past five competitive matches, winning three.

Iceland team news

Iceland will look to the likes of Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir and Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir to help them breach the Finland defence. Amanda Andradottir made the Iceland squad despite injury worries.

Finland team news

Veteran goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela did make it into Finland’s Euro 2025 squad after an injury worry. It will be a big boost for Finland, even if she doesn’t start.

Iceland vs Finland head-to-head

These two sides last met in 2023, with Finland winning a friendly 1-2 away from home. That was the last of four meetings between the sides, with Iceland being triumphant in two of those meetings.
