Coventry suffered heartbreak in the play-offs last season, but look well poised to go well again under Frank Lampard this time round. The Sky Blues won seven of their previous eight home matches in 2024/25 before the play-offs, and can build on the 79 points they collected in total for the campaign.
Hull, on the other hand, survived relegation by the skin of their teeth. The Tigers won just two of their final nine matches, and with a squad that appears to lack quality, they look set to struggle once again this term.

How both teams go into Coventry vs Hull
Coventry suffered heartbreak last season. They had struggled early in the campaign but their fortunes changed after appointing Frank Lampard. The former Chelsea manager transformed the Sky Blues and lifted them into the play-off spots. With form on their side, it looked like Coventry could seal promotion to the Premier League.
But they missed out for the second time in three seasons. This time it was a semi-final exit at the hands of Sunderland, who were eventually promoted. There’s no reason why Coventry shouldn’t be challenging again, though, with three top-10 finishes in a row.
Hull’s decline last season may have been a surprise to those looking from the outside. But the Tigers paid the price for sacking Liam Rosenior at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. In his final season in charge, Rosenior led Hull to a seventh-placed finish, missing out on the play-offs by just three points.
Tim Walter was brought in to replace Rosenior, but he was sacked by November. Ruben Selles took charge for the rest of the campaign, but he could only seal safety on the final day on goal difference. Selles has been sacked too, with Sergej Jakirovic at the helm. Hull will be hoping for a bit more stability this season.
Coventry team news
As the opening weekend approaches, doubts still linger over Haji Wright’s fitness, despite his appearance on the bench in the final pre-season match. Meanwhile, Jack Rudoni sat out that game due to a calf issue, though manager Frank Lampard remains hopeful the influential midfielder will be fit in time for Saturday.
Hull team news
New boss Sergej Jakirovic is likely to opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation, with recent arrivals Semi Ajayi and John Lundstram set to feature from the start. Meanwhile, the squad remains without Eliot Matazo, who is sidelined until December, and long-term absentees Liam Millar and Mohamed Belloumi, neither of whom are expected back before the first international break.
