Colombia were able to flex their muscles against Uzbekistan on Thursday morning, growing into the game to claim the victory by a 3-1 score line.
The game started slowly in what shaped up to be a cagey affair. Uzbekistan did well to neutralise Colombia’s attacking threat for much of the first half but they were eventually undone five minutes before the break. Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz was the man to find the net, finishing superbly following Luis Diaz’s ball into the box.
The second-half followed a similar pattern to the first, with neither side really finding their feet in the early stages. Uzbekistan were able to shock Colombia on the hour mark when they found an equaliser against the run of play. Abbosbek Fayzullaev was the man to profit, finishing smartly with his head after Eldor Shomurodov’s fantastic volley came back off the woodwork.
Their joy didn’t last long, however. Colombia retook the lead just five minutes later when Diaz’s effort found the net. It was a disappointing goal for Uzbekistan to concede for a number of reasons, not least because goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov should’ve done much better in dealing with the shot.
Uzbekistan huffed and puffed in the final 25 minutes but lacked the clinical edge to really carve out the chances they needed to create. They never really looked like equalising again and their fate was sealed deep into stoppage time when Jaminton Campaz headed Colombia further into the lead.
