Brazil left it late to secure a 2-1 win over Japan to move into the Round of 16 and set up a time against either Ivory Coast or Norway.
The first half of normal time was relatively even, although Brazil saw more of the ball and had more chances. It was Japan that took the lead just before the half hour mark. Kaishu Sano was allowed the freedom of the Brazilian midfield and finished superbly from just outside the area.
Brazil continued to have the better of the half but were unable to find an equaliser before the break.
The second half saw Brazil take even more control as they searched for a way back into the game. Japan started to retreat further and further back towards their own goal to protect the lead and they were lucky to maintain their lead on a couple of occasions.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half Brazil were finally able to find the goal they needed. A great cross from the left by Gabriel was met by Casemiro and he was able to power his header home from inside the six yard box. The goal only seemed to give Brazil more impetus and they continued to have the better of the play.
Japan proved tough to break down, though, and the game looked destined for extra time. The script was rewritten deep into stoppage time, however. Bruno Guimaraes picked up the ball just outside the area and fed a superb ball through to substitute, Gabriel Martinelli. The Arsenal forward found space in the box and was able to poke his shot past Zion Suzuki in the Japanese goal to give Brazil the win at the last possible moment.
Brazil now move onto the Round of 16, while Japan see their tournament end in disappointment once again.
