    Australia put in a defensive masterclass to grab a 2-0 victory over Turkey in their 2026 World Cup Group C opener, putting themselves in pole position to qualify for the Round of 32.

    Turkey were much fancied as dark horses coming into the tournament but they flattered to deceive in their first match, leaving them scrambling to find results against United States and Paraguay.

    While Turkey dominated the ball and created more in the opening stages, it was Australia that looked the more dangerous side on the counter attack. This proved to be the case just before the half-hour mark when Nestory Irankunda showed his pace and power to break through the Turkish defence and finish well.

    It was a lead that Australia looked to protect at all costs with some desperate defending, coupled with some excellent saves from the impressive Patrick Beach keeping them in the lead.

    Turkey ramped up the pressure as the second half went on but, again, it was Australia that were the side to find the net. Another breakaway saw Connor Metcalfe find himself 25 yards out and struck a sweet, low shot that beat Ugurcan Cakir in the Turkish goal.

    There was plenty of huff and puff from Turkey in the closing stages but they failed to create a clearcut chance and Australia held on to collect a famous 2-0 victory.
