Manchester United get their FA Cup campaign underway with a third-round tie against Championship side Watford on Saturday at 8pm (UK time).

The 12-time winners of English football’s blue riband knockout competition recently exited the League Cup semi-finals, losing 2-0 to rivals Man City on Wednesday, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be eager to soothe that derby defeat with a win over Watford this weekend.

Watford XI: Bachmann, Navarro, Sierralta, Troost-Ekong, Masina, Sarr, Chalobah, Hughes, Zinckernagel, Pedro, Gray

Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 3-1 Watford

Man Utd vs Watford build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Despite falling at the penultimate hurdle in the League Cup, the mood remains vibrant at Old Trafford, with Solskjaer navigating his side up to second in the Premier League table and level on points with reigning champions Liverpool, who have also played a game extra.

The complexion is slightly different in the Championship for Watford. The Hornets already have one third-round exit (losing 3-1 to Newport in the League Cup) as well as a managerial exit (Vladimir Ivic suffering the sack last month) on their 2020/21 CV. New boss Xisco has been in the dugout for just two games but can really make a statement to his new fans with a win against the Red Devils.

  • Man Utd (vs Man City): Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred, Rashford, Fernandes, Pogba; Martial
  • Watford (vs Swansea): Foster; Femenia, Sierralta, Wilmot, Ngakia; Sarr, Cleverley, Chalobah, Sema; Gray, Deeney.

For Man Utd, Edinson Cavani remains suspended, while Solskjaer is likely to give a run out for fringe quartet Axel Tuanzebe, Donny van de Beek, Daniel James and Juan Mata.

For the visiting, side James Garner is ineligible to face his parent club, while Xisco’s casualty list remains extensive, with Domingos Quina, Isaac Success, Stipe Perica and Christian Kabasele all currently sidelined. Craig Cathcart — a product of Man Utd’s academy back in the day — and Joao Pedro, though, are in contention to make the matchday squad.

Player to watch: Daniel James (Man Utd)

Having fallen out of the limelight at the start of the season, Daniel James has just started to attract the attention of Solskjaer once again and will be eager to showcase his talents this weekend. Blessed with implacable pace, the Welsh winger was unstoppable on the counter against Leeds last month and earned a start against Leicester on Boxing Day. He has since been reduced to a bench role in games against Wolves and Aston Villa, but will try to elbow his way back to the top of the pecking order if he is given the nod against Watford. And his speed could be what’s needed against a stubborn Watford rearguard, with the Hornets boasting the second-best defensive record in the Championship this term.
