Manchester United v Tottenham predicted XIs: Team news & possible lineups

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur face off on Saturday in a game that could have big implications on the Premier League’s top four (5:30pm kick-off, UK time).

The Red Devils are currently one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal but crucially have played three games more than the Gunners, so are reliant on Mikel Arteta’s side dropping points before the end of the season. Tottenham are two points further back but do have two games in hand on Man Utd and could seriously boost their chances of Champions League football with a win at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane is back in training for Man Utd after previously testing positive for Covid, meaning he will be available for selection, while Edinson Cavani is also back with the squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to train separately after a hip issue, while Luke Shaw is still out with Covid – though both aren’t totally ruled out.

Tottenham may be unchanged from their win over Everton on Monday with no fresh injury concerns and no returns. Antonio Conte is still unhappy with the recovery time of Oliver Skipp, and there is no current return time for midfielder. Japhet Tanganga is also out, while Ryan Sessegnon won’t be back from injury until after the international break.

With no changes made, Harry Kane is certain to lead the line again and the Englishman is happy with his form under Conte, praising the Tottenham manager for his impact.

“The manager is a fantastic coach. I really enjoy working with him,” Kane said.

“Antonio has definitely given me more strings to my bow.

“I’m always someone who (wants) to improve. When I’m 35, 36 I’ll still be trying to improve. That’s just my mindset.

“I feel like physically I’m in a really good place. Mentally, my game understanding and my awareness on the pitch is at a really high level.”

Kane has scored five goals in his past four Premier League matches including two against Everton on Monday to take him to 10 league goals for the season, the eighth consecutive campaign in which he has achieved that landmark.

And Conte is similarly happy with Kane, backing the Englishman to become the top striker in the world.

“About Harry, we are talking a world-class striker,” Conte told reporters.

“I am very lucky to have a player like him, to work with him, because I always said we are talking about a fantastic player, but at the same time he is a fantastic person.

“He is always available to work, work hard, give example to the other players. He shows me every day the will, desire to improve himself, to try to become stronger, stronger, stronger.

“I think he can become the best striker in the world.”
