No. 2 seed Medvedev has enjoyed a purple patch on the court this past year, already reaching three Grand Slam finals and winning his first major championship back in September after beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open. The 26-year-old took that stateside form to this year’s Australian Open to reach his second successive final, just coming up short to Rafael Nadal at Melbourne Park.

Now, Medvedev will be hoping to produce something special on clay. His track record at Roland-Garros isn’t great. He crashed out of the First Round in each of his first four appearances at the Parisian tournament between 2017 and 2020, and only managed to buck that worrying trend last year, reaching the quarter-finals, where eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas knocked him out in straight sets.

And he’s already made a promising start in the French capital this week, easing past Facundo Bagnis. Laslo Dere, likewise, had few issues navigating past Ricardas Berankis in the First Round, and he will be hoping to reach consecutive Third Rounds at the French Open for the first time in his career. But, in Medvedev, the Serbian right-hander faces one of the most in-form tennis players at the minute.
