Although it doesn’t quite match the feeling of scoring a goal, providing an assist is one of the most satisfying things a footballer can achieve on the pitch.
Whether it’s splitting the defence in two with a piercing through-ball or whipping in a cross for a runner at the near post, the guy setting up a chance is just as important as the one adding the finishing touch.
In La Liga last season, Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas was the assist king with 13 to go with his impressive tally of 14 goals, while Atletico Madrid’s Marcos Llorente was second with 11. Usual suspects Toni Kroos, Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema also featured in the top 10.
It is Benzema who currently leads the race in the early stages of the 2021/22 season, recording five assists (to add to his La Liga-high six goals), once again proving himself as one of the best centre forwards in world football having been somewhat under-appreciated by those outside Real Madrid. The Frenchman sits two assists clear of Iker Munain before a group of six with two including Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
So, as the 2021/22 campaign unfolds and Real Madrid and Barcelona battle it out to rip the title from Atletico’s grasp, use our table below to keep track of who has provided the most assists in the Spanish top-flight.
