The battle to become this season’s assist king in La Liga has picked up again following the division’s return to action this month.
As things stand there’s a danger of it turning into a procession with Barcelona captain and supreme playmaker Lionel Messi alone in double figures after 32 rounds have been played.
Messi – currently on 17 assists – also happens to be one of just two players across Europe’s top five leagues to have registered 15+ goals and 15+ assists this season, alongside Bundesliga star Jadon Sancho.
The Argentinian’s nearest challengers in La Liga come in the guise of Real Sociedad attacking midfielder Portu, who is nine behind Messi, as well as his partner-in-crime Luis Suarez and Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard brought up eight assists for the season after setting up goals in Villarreal’s past two games.
One further back from Portu, Suarez and Cazorla is a group of four players on seven assists, consisting of Karim Benzema, Rodrigo, Fabian Orellana and Roberto Torres of Osasuna, while no fewer than five players have created six goals.
