Gareth Bale could be set to remain in Madrid after Getafe president Angel Torres revealed the Welsh superstar has offered his services to them.

Bale, 32, is set to leave Real Madrid this summer upon the expiration of his contract and will be eyeing up a new club in a bid to stay match fit ahead of Wales’ first appearance at a World Cup since 1958, following their qualification at the weekend.

Rob Page’s men belatedly booked their ticket at this year’s quadrennial tournament after beating Ukraine in their World Cup play-off on Sunday at the Cardiff City Stadium, in which Bale’s deflected free-kick secured Wales a 1-0 victory.

There were suggestions Bale could retire this summer if Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup, but following their heroic effort to book a place at the competition for the first time in over 60 years, the 32-year-old is set to join a new club ahead of 2022/23.

Cardiff — the city where Bale was born — have been touted as a possible destination for the forward, but Getafe have now emerged as a shock front-runner following their president’s claim that his agent, Jonathan Barnett, sounded him out over a potential move.

During a Getafe kit launch for 2022/23, Torres was quizzed on the potential of Bale joining, to which he replied: “People might take it as a joke but about 45, 50 minutes ago, I spoke to his representative and they have offered him to us.

“It is not something invented by Roberto [Gomez, the presenter]”. He continued: “I had seen it mentioned last night on TV, the reasons why he wants to stay were looked into, the possibility of him [wanting] to come to Getafe. I have to turn it over [in my mind] and speak to the coach, who is away.

“All good footballers are a possibility. I can come up with anything. As I say: he was offered, I listened politely and from there I will consult with the sporting director and the coach and anything is possible.”
