Switzerland vs Canada

  • Switzerland key stat: Switzerland have scored the most penalties (two) at the World Cup so far.
  • Canada key stat: Only Germany (nine) have scored more goals at this World Cup than Canada (seven).

Top spot in Group B is on the line as Canada and Switzerland meet in a decisive showdown in Vancouver. Canada only need a draw to finish first thanks to their superior goal difference, while Switzerland must win to leapfrog them at the summit.

Even if one of them loses the game, they still should finish in the top-2 due to their vastly superior goal difference over Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Qatar.

Only Germany (nine) have scored more goals at this tournament than Canada’s seven, with Jonathan David accounting for three of them following his sensational hat-trick during the 6-0 demolition of Qatar. That haul leaves the Canadian forward tied for fourth place in the Golden Boot standings.

David has also been one of the tournament’s most active attackers. His 11 shots are bettered only by Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Kenan Yıldız, while his six efforts on target trail only Messi, Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Switzerland have lost only won of their last nine group stage games at World Cups, against Brazil four years ago.

The National Team, who have reached the last-16 in the last three editions, have created eight big chances so far in North America, second only to Germany’s 10, and have had the most penalties, scoring twice from the spot (once in each game).

Johan Manzambi stole the show in the 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovinam during which he became the youngest player in World Cup history to score two goals as substitute.

Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Qatar

  • Bosnia-Herzegovina key stat: The Dragons are seeking only their second ever World Cup win and first since beating Iran in 2014.
  • Qatar key stat: Qatar’s winless run could stretch to six games at the World Cup,  leaving only Honduras (nine) and New Zealand (eight) with longer winless runs among countries still searching for their first World Cup victory.

37.5% of the total red cards at this year’s World Cup have come from Bosnia-Herzegovina (one) and Qatar (two), while the former have accumulated the second most yellows (five).

A feisty affair could be on the cards tonight as both countries simply have to win to have any hope of progressing through to the knockout stages. Second spot is probably out of reach given their respective goal difference, but a more realistic target is finishing as one of the best third-place finishers.

Bosnia-Herzegovina will be desperate to claim only their second ever World Cup win – the first was a 3-1 victory over Iran in 2014 – as they bid to escape the group stages for the first time in their history.

They, as always, will look to record goalscorer Edin Dzeko (73 goals) who has a goal involvement in six of his last 10 competitive internationals. If he scores against Qatar, it will be the first time ever that two players over 40 have scored at the same World Cup following Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, Qatar, who haven’t won any of their last eight internationals, need to do something they’ve never done before: win a game at the World Cup.

The Maroon One have lost four and drawn one of their first five matches across two editions, a winless run that would stretch to six if they fail to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina, leaving only Honduras (nine games without a win) and New Zealand (eight) with longer winless runs among countries still searching for their first World Cup victory.
