Mexico were victorious on the opening day of World Cup 2026, now it’s time for the other two co-hosts, Canada and the United States, to take to the stage on day two of the tournament.

Canada open up their campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina at the BMO Field in Toronto at 8pm on Friday night (BST), before the USA face Paraguay at California’s SoFi Stadium in the early hours of Saturday morning (2am BST).

Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina stats

  • Canada snapshot stat: Canada are seeking their first ever point – and win – at a World Cup, having lost all six of their six matches across two previous editions.
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina snapshot stat: Bosnia-Herzegovina could draw 1-1 for the fifth time in six matches.

Canada head into their home World Cup with a point to prove. Their previous two appearances in 1986 and 2022 resulted in six defeats from six matches, making them one of only two countries, alongside El Salvador, to have played at least six World Cup games without earning a single point. Another defeat against Bosnia-Herzegovina would see them become the first country in tournament history to lose their opening seven World Cup matches.

However, there is growing optimism around the Maple Leafs under former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch. Canada head into the tournament on the back of an eight-match unbeaten run and will believe that this is an ideal opportunity to finally break their World Cup duck when they open their Group B campaign on Friday night.

Home support could also play a major role. Canada boast an outstanding recent record at Toronto’s BMO Field, where they have won 18, drawn nine, and lost just one of their last 28 matches.

Record goalscorer Jonathan David is just one goal away from becoming the first Canadian player to reach 40 international goals, while their second highest-scorer, Cyle Larin (30), heads into the tournament in excellent form after scoring eight times in 16 appearances for Southampton following his January move from RCD Mallorca.

This will be only Bosnia-Herzegovina’s second World Cup after they stunned Italy on penalties in the qualification play-offs. In their first appearance at Brazil 2014 they lost narrowly to Argentina and Nigeria, but at least bowed out on a high with a 3-1 win against Iran.

Much of their hopes rest on veteran striker Edin Dzeko, who continues to rewrite the record books for his country. Only four UEFA players scored more goals in qualifying than the 40-year-old, whose six goals in nine games fired his international tally to 73, placing him among the top-20 men’s international goalscorers of all time. Two more goals would move him into the top-15, although he is a doubt for the game.

Bosnia-Herzegovina are well organised, a tough nut to crack, and – as the play-offs proved – resilient, having gone eight games unbeaten since September 2025. If you’re looking for a correct score bet then 1-1 at 6/1 with bet365 could be the way to go given that this has been the result in four of their last five games.

United States vs Paraguay stats

  • United States snapshot stat: The US have a 0% win rate at the SoFi Stadium, losing both of their games there.
  • Paraguay snapshot stat: Paraguay will be looking to win an opening World Cup game for the first time since 1986, which would be only their second win in nine openers.

The United States and Group D opponents Paraguay will renew acquaintances at the World Cup for the first time in 96 years when they meet in Los Angeles on Saturday. Their only previous meeting at the tournament came at the inaugural World Cup in 1930, when the US triumphed 3-0 en-route to a third-place finish. Overall, the US have won five the nine meetings, losing just twice.

This is the Stars and Stripes’ 11th World Cup appearance, but their record at the tournament is a mixed one. They have won only nine of their 37 matches on football’s biggest stage, with 20 defeats giving them the joint-sixth highest loss total (20) in World Cup history.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side arrive in California searching for momentum after losing three of their last four matches. The SoFi Stadium offers little comfort either with the US losing both of their games there: a 1-0 defeat to Panama and a 2-1 loss to Canada in the space of four days at the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League.

Star man Christian Pulisic needs one more goal to draw level with Eric Wynalda (4th) in the list of all-time US scorers. The winger scored and assisted twice at the 2022 World Cup, although prior to that he was struggling without a goal in 21 games for club and country.

Another player to keep an eye on is Folarin Balogun, who scored in the recent 3-2 win over Senegal. The Monaco striker ended the club season in electric form, scoring 11 goals in his final 14 appearances at club level.

Paraguay finished sixth in qualifying to book their return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals, despite only scoring three times. They have, however, won only seven of their 27 World Cup games, which is a win rate of just 24.3%.

Paraguay have won only one of their last 20 competitive games outside their country and history says La Albirroja do tend to start slow, with one win from their last eight opening games at World Cups (1986 when they beat Iraq 1-0).

Paraguay have, though, won three of their last four games heading into the 2026 tournament. Among those victories was a 2-1 victory over Mexico, although they were beaten by the US when the two sides met in a friendly last November.
