Man City vs Arsenal stats & analysis: Bernardo Silva stars as Pep's men deliver title hammer blow

Manchester City stole the initiative in the Premier League title race with a 2-1 win over leaders Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Separated by six points in the table, but with City holding a game in hand, this was undoubtedly the biggest game of the 2025/26 season, and it delivered.

City drew first blood in the 16th minute when Rayan Cherki beautifully danced through the Arsenal defence and slotted low beyond David Raya. However, the lead lasted less than two minutes, with Kai Havertz chasing down Gianluigi Donnarumma at the other end and blocking the Italian’s clearance into the back of the net.

Arsenal almost took the lead twice just before and after the hour mark, but were denied first by a sprawling Donnarumma save, then by the inside of the post from efforts by Havertz and Eberechi Eze, respectively.

And five minutes later, City seized control not just of the match, but of the battle to become champions, with none other than Erling Haaland sweeping home a low cross from the impressive Nico O’Reilly.

Bernardo Silva: Man City’s unsung hero delivers again

Haaland and Cherki will steal the headlines for City thanks to their excellent, season-defining goals. Further focus will be given to O’Reilly, who was once again tireless down the left flank, causing mayhem in the Arsenal defence.

However, it would be a disservice not to pay tribute to Bernardo Silva in this most important of games.

The Portuguese veteran will bring an end to nine years at the Etihad Stadium at the end of this season, and he’s so often been an unsung hero of City’s greatest success over the years. His performance on Sunday was the epitome of that notion.

Silva was a metronome with the ball in midfield, completing 53 of his 60 passes, including five into the final third, while putting four crosses into the Gunners’ box.

But far more important than that was Silva’s relentless work without the ball. The 31-year-old — playing in his 47th game of the season if you include the Club World Cup — made three tackles, four recoveries and one clearance, popping up all over the pitch to put out fires and shut Arsenal down, just at the key moments when the visitors were gaining traction.

“Bernardo Silva, that was absolutely incredible,” Gary Neville declared in his commentary for Sky Sports as he named him Man of the Match.

We’re inclined to agree. Silva did nothing headline-grabbing or flashy in this match. Instead, he did absolutely everything Manchester City needed.

Man City breathing down Arsenal’s necks

The formula for Manchester City now is so simple: keep winning games and you will win the title.

Pep Guardiola’s men have closed the gap on Arsenal to just three points, with that precious game in hand away at almost-relegated Burnley to come on Wednesday.

Along the way, City have also reduced Arsenal’s goal difference lead to just one, while they’ve scored more goals, meaning any victory at Turf Moor will send them top of the table.

Of course, there is the outlandish scenario where both teams win their remaining fixtures and Arsenal manage to outscore City. However, this is a Gunners side with just one win in their last six across all competitions and sliding toward an utter collapse.

It would be heartbreaking to see Arsenal finish second for a fourth straight season. However, Arteta knows better than anyone else how difficult Guardiola and his side will be to shake off from here.

City have all the momentum, and the writing looks to be on the wall for Arsenal.

The banner held aloft by the Manchester City supporters at the end said it all: “Panic on the streets of London.”
