Czech Republic vs Mexico stats and analysis: Javier Aguirre’s rotated side flexes its frightening depth as the toothless Czechs bow out

Mexico cruised past Czech Republic 3-0 in Mexico City to top Group A at the 2026 World Cup with a perfect record.

Javier Aguirre made six changes to his starting lineup. Despite the rotation, La Tri easily picked apart a blunt Czech Republic side. The visitors arrived in the co-hosts’ capital needing nothing less than a win, but they offered very little resistance.

Instead, Mexico put on a clinic in front of their own fans. They played some vibrant football and truly turned on the style after the break. Second-half goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and a late Alvaro Fidalgo sweetener accurately reflected their absolute supremacy.

La Tri’s defensive milestones

Mexico preserved a foundational tournament record that is starting to defy belief. El Tri’s first-half resilience was of particular note, as you have to go back to Carlos Tevez scoring for Argentina in the 2010 Round of 16 clash with Mexico for the last time they conceded a first-half goal at a World Cup finals. By nullifying the Czech Republic in the opening 45 minutes tonight, Javier Aguirre’s side extended their unbelievable streak to 14 consecutive World Cup matches without being breached before the interval.

Also, by securing three straight clean sheets at these finals, El Tricolor have displayed a flawless group-stage defensive shutdown to match that of Uruguay in 2018. Both teams navigated their opening three group stage matches without conceding, and it’s a stat that displays just how durable this Mexican side are.

Luxury rotation

Having already locked down top spot in Group A before a ball was kicked tonight, Javier Aguirre opted to flex his squad’s depth in a bid to combat tournament fatigue. The gamble ultimately paid off, with his side scoring three goals to win the game, while keeping a clean sheet to boot.

Within those changes was a historic start for 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora. He became the youngest Mexican to play for his country at the World Cup. This zero-pressure environment was the perfect stage for the youngster to strut his stuff, helping blood him in for the knockout stages should La Tri require something special from their wildcard.

Similarly, Mateo Chavez, who was making just his 11th appearance for the national team, brought the house down with his first international goal and Mexico’s opener. Tonight’s appearance offered him his first minutes of the tournament so far, and highlighted just how important fringe and bit-part players are to a team’s success.

There was also room for sentimentality in Mexico City. Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa – Mexico’s third-most capped player – was given an emotional moment. His cameo made him the oldest Mexican to play at a World Cup, as well as the seventh-oldest player in World Cup history. His sub appearance also makes him the seventh player aged 40 or over to appear at this year’s finals alone, turning 41 the day after the 2026 World Cup final.

There was even time for a final piece of tournament folklore in stoppage time. Substitute midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo stepped off the bench to sweep home his first World Cup goal. The strike sealed a comprehensive victory for the co-hosts. More importantly, it proved that Aguirre’s squad depth runs frighteningly deep.

Toothless Czechs

Czech Republic’s open-play drought continued as they were dumped out of the competition with very little resistance. Miroslav Koubek’s side required a historic victory to keep his team’s knockout stage hopes alive, yet their attacking strategy was predictable and lacked fluidity.

The Czechs have still failed to score a single open-play goal all year long, with six of their last seven coming from set-pieces and the other from the penalty spot. Mexico’s rotated backline was able to easily anticipate their repeated aerial routines and marshalling their own box excellently despite two unforced changes.
