    Player ratings as Frankfurt kill Barcelona on the counter in “one of the all-time Europa League away days”

    Eintracht Frankfurt shocked Barcelona, winning 2-3 at the Camp Nou to make the semi-finals of the Europa League.

    The scoreline was close in the end as the Blaugrana launched a spirited comeback late on but for 80 minutes Frankfurt were the better side, crucifying the Blaugrana on the counter-attack. This was one of the all-time Europa League away days from Oli Glasner’s mad lads.

    Here’s how the players rated at Camp Nou:

    Barcelona

    Marc-André Ter Stegen – 6 – It’s absurd to say that Ter Stegen played well despite shipping three goals, but he did! Two of the goals were absolutely breathtaking finishes and the other was a penalty and he made a couple more big saves besides that.

    Oscar Mingueza – 4 – All at sea against the Frankfurt counter-attack and was a complete non-entity in possession. Only lasted until the hour because Dest isn’t physically ready for a full half.

    Ronald Araujo – 7 – A one-man defence. Did the best he could but none of his team-mates gave him any real help.

    Eric Garcia – 3 – Needlessly conceded a penalty with what can only be described as 1990’s defending. Garcia’s lack of physical stature means he plays with too much aggression. A bigger defender wouldn’t have had to put hands on Lundstrom like that. He’s been playing better of late, but this is a weakness inherent in his physical stature and until he hits the gym it will keep on happening.

    Jordi Alba – 4 – Had his pants pulled down by Knauff over and over again. Didn’t really produce anything in attack either.

    Sergio Busquets – 6 – Ghosted through the first 85 minutes. Clearly just doesn’t like Bundesliga sides as the last time was this poor in a big game was against Bayern Munich. But came alive in the final few minutes, scoring once only to see it ruled out and then hammering in a belter to give Barceona a glimmer of hope.

    Pedri – 6 – Some unreal passes. Put himself at the hub of Barcelona’s attempts to prise Frankfurt apart and just couldn’t get it done. Came off at half-time with a knock to his left leg, and unsurprisingly Barcelona fell apart without him.

    Gavi – 7 – Feisty. Excellent pressing. Tried every trick you can imagine to turn it around and never once gave up the fight despite an early yellow. This 17-year-old has a warrior’s soul and is destined for greatness.

    Ousmane Dembélé – 5 – Very lively start to the game. A constant menace driving at Frankfurt’s back-line. However he faded quite badly after half-time, constantly giving the ball away and looking around confused.

    Ferran Torres – 5 – Some delicious dribbling but just couldn’t sort that final pass out.

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 4 – Denied service in the first-half but missed a sitter right at the start of the second. In terms of “you had one job!” memes, well, Auba, you had one job!

    Barcelona Substitutes:

    Frenkie De Jong (for Pedri 46′) – 6 – Added a lot of drive initially, provoking the attacking move that led to Auba’s big miss.

    Adama Traoré (for Aubameyang 62′) – 5 – Crowded out. Really not a factor.

    Sergino Dest (for Mingueza 62′) – 7 – Added a bit of solidity. How Barcelona would have loved him to be fit to start.

    Luuk de Jong (for Eric 70′) – 6 – Was a target up-front but couldn’t produce another miracle like he did against Levante although he did unsettle Frankfurt and provoke a penalty to give them a late scare.

    Memphis Depay (for Ferran 80′) – 7 – His set-pieces gave Frankfurt no end of problems. Got lucky that his penalty was hit with such ferocity even Trapp’s save couldn’t keep it out.

    Eintracht Frankfurt

    Kevin Trapp – 7 – Really impressive in the Frankfurt goal. Was only beaten by a storming strike from Busquets and a penalty that he got a hand to anyway.

    Almamy Touré – 8 – So solid against Barcelona’s left-flank you’d never know he’s barely featured this season.

    Martin Hinteregger– 9 – As with the first leg, got himself in the way of everything. A game-high 10 clearances as he repelled all but the most ridiculous golazo from Barcelona. He plays football from another age but he took Barcelona on a trip back in time tonight.

    Evan Ndicka – 8 – Put in a really good display full of fierce blocks but got himself sent off at the end for elbowing Luuk De Jong.

    Ansgar Knauff – 8 – Tortured Jordi Alba all night. Excellent movement and skill, but just couldn’t find the killer touch as he did last week.

    Kristijan Jakic – 8 – Really dynamic in the middle, offering an energy and drive that Barcelona struggled to match.

    Sebastian Rode – 7 – Put one hell of a shift in.

    Filip Kostic – 9 – Buried the penalty to start the game. Superb defensive effort to help contain Dembélé after that and then scored a superbly precise effort to give Frankfurt a barely believable third goal.

    Jesper Lindstrom – 7 – Provoked the penalty. Ran his heart out.

    Daichi Kamada – 9 – Given Frankfurt’s approach he was arguably as important as Hinteregger. Ran Ousmane Dembélé off the right-flank and then devoured Adama Traoré with his sublime tracking and tackling.

    Rafael Santos Borre – 8 – Piledrove Frankfurt into a 0-2 lead with an absolute MONSTER of a strike and put a beastly defensive shift besides that.

    Eintracht Frankfurt Substitutes:

    Jens Hauge (for Lundstrom 80′) – 6 – Was calm.

    Ajdin Hrustic (for Rode 80′) – 5 – Did little but contribute to thc haos.

    Ragnar Ache (for Borré 90′) – n/a – Came on late.

    Timothy Chandler (for Knauff’ 90’+9) – n/a – Came on late

    Makoto Hasebe (for Touré 90’+9) – n/a – Came on late.
