For those who may be new, the EuroLeague is in its 24th season of the modern era, having previously been known as the European Champions Cup. This isn’t to be confused with the Basketball Champions League, which is what replaced the Champions Cup after FIBA lost the rights for the tournament when EuroLeague Basketball was created.

But while the Champions League is the pinnacle of the football world, the EuroLeague is widely recognised as the top tier of European basketball. EuroLeague consists of 18 teams, with 12 given long-term licences, one a two-year licence, plus three one-year wildcards. Think of it like a basketball European Super League. The final two spots each season are given to the top two teams from the previous campaign’s EuroCup (second tier); however, if one of the EuroCup teams is unable to take part, then another side has to be voted in to take their place.

That’s what happened to Valencia, who were voted in to replace EuroCup winners Dreamland Gran Canaria, after they decided not to take part due to budgetary concerns. They joined by AS Monaco, who qualified through the winning the EuroCup in 2021/22 and held onto their spot having reached the final four last season alongside Olympiacos, Real Madrid and Barcelona. That’s the other caveat for the EuroCup spots; if the highest-placed of the clubs qualifying from the EuroCup reaches the play-off, they will remain in the EuroLeague for the following season. In that case, only the EuroCup winner gets a spot.

The format has also been slightly changed this season. While the league campaign goes on as usual, rather than the top eight automatically qualifying for the playoffs — with the other 10 knocked out — only the top six earn a direct place. The final two spots are now decided by the play-in tournament, which will include the teams that placed seventh to 10th in the table. So now, 10 places offer something after the regular season is over, giving some of those teams on the periphery something to fight for.

Real Madrid are the defending champions, having beaten Olympiacos in last season’s final, despite finishing third in the regular season table. It was a record 14th title for the Spanish side, but their first since 2018. They’ve started the new season well too, winning 16 of their opening 118 games. They sit three wins clear of Virtus Bologna in second and four ahead of rivals Barcelona, who occupy third and beat Real Madrid in round 18.

At the other end of the table, ASVEL are rooted to the bottom with just two wins from 18, while Alba Berlin are only one win ahead in 17th.
