Manchester City’s chaotic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield was unquestionably the moment of the Premier League season to date.
While there may have been better games in months gone by, football is about so much more than that with drama at the heart of why so many people around the world love this game.
From Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick and Bernardo Silva’s equaliser from nowhere to Alisson’s moment of madness and Erling Haaland’s nerveless penalty, there was already more than enough to talk about. But more was to come.
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s save to deny Alexis Mac Allister was incredible but is a mere footnote at this point with Rayan Cherki’s ghost goal instead the unforgettable final act.
With Alisson up front, Man City broke and as Cherki passed the ball forward, Szoboszlai pulled back Haaland to prevent him reaching it before the Norwegian striker returned the favour.
The ball rolled in but was cruelly taken away by VAR with Szoboszlai being sent off for his last man foul.

Brighton 2-3 Man Utd (2020-21)
This game was bizarre for many reasons, namely it taking place in the now-dystopian COVID era of football.
Solly March thought he had rescued Brighton and Hove Albion a point from a seesaw game with a headed equaliser in the fifth minute of added time.
However, in the final play of the game and right before the whistle blew, Neal Maupay handled at a corner. After a VAR check and a restart of the game, Bruno Fernandes slotted home to seal Manchester United’s win.
Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham (2022-23)
Ironically given Sunday’s loss, no side has won more games in added time in the Premier League era than Liverpool’s 47. And fittingly for this game, no side has lost more than Tottenham Hotspur – 28.
Spurs rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to level things up through Richarlison in the 93rd minute. With the former Everton striker barely having his jersey back on after a wild celebration, Diogo Jota pounced to steal the points for Liverpool in one of many memorable moments in red for the much-missed Portuguese forward.
Norwich 4-5 Liverpool (2015-16)
Another appearance for Liverpool and another game with two added time goals. This was one of the first big moments for Jurgen Klopp with the Reds with Adam Lallana striking the winner in the 95th minute.
The midfielder’s goal came just three minutes after Sebastien Bassong looked to have rescued a point for Norwich City in a game that went back and forth until the very, very end.

Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham (2008-09)
A happier dramatic ending for Tottenham, who rescued a point at the home of their most bitter rivals in stunning fashion.
There was several notable elements to this game. It was Harry Redknapp’s first game in charge. Former Arsenal youth player David Bentley scored one of the best-ever North London derby goals from the halfway line.
Arsenal led 4-2 in the 89th minute but Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon’s goals levelled things up right at the death and gave the white side of North London a night to remember.
Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal (2010-11)
More misery for Arsenal here and the only game on our list that doesn’t feature an extra-time goal.
In a totally fair defence, it is the best comeback in Premier League history. Arsenal led 4-0 at a stunned St James’ Park going into the break but the phrase “a game of two halves” was never more apt.
Newcastle fought back and Cheick Tiote’s stunning 87th-minute volley completed the most remarkable of turnarounds.
West Brom 1-2 Liverpool (2020-21)
Only six goalkeepers have scored in the 34 years of the Premier League. But only one has ever scored a winner. And with his head.
With Liverpool chasing a top four finish, Alisson went up for a corner in the 95th minute against West Bromwich Albion. He powered a header home in front of a sadly empty Hawthorns.
It is one of the few lockdown moments worth remembering and it’s little wonder the Brazilian went up again on Sunday against Man City.
Chelsea 4-3 Man Utd (2023-24)
This game had it all. Chelsea led 2-0 before now-Blues star Alejandro Garnacho inspired a comeback for Man Utd, who thought they had the win deep into added time.
In fact, their leading position with 99 minutes and 17 seconds on the clock is the latest a side has ever been ahead and still lost in the Premier League.
Cole Palmer levelled with his second penalty before completing his hat-trick moments later with the latest winner in the post-1992 era.
Man Utd 4-3 Man City (2009-10)
On the flip side of a 4-3, Man Utd won the most dramatic of Manchester derbies 15 years earlier.
Man Utd led three times only forMan City to peg them back every time, with Craig Bellamy capitalising on a Rio Ferdinand howler in the 90th minute to seemingly grab a point for the then “Noisy Neighbours.”
Cue Michael Owen, who silenced them with his first Old Trafford goal and the winner in the 96th minute. Added time? Fergie time.
Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle (1995-96)
To many, the game of the entire Premier League era.
Kevin Keegan returned to Anfield with his Newcastle United side chasing the league title, and they led both 2-1 and 3-2. Stan Collymore made it 3-3 with over 20 minutes to go but that was far from his final act.
His 92nd minute winner is synonymous with Martin Tyler’s commentary and Keegan’s reaction and remains a moment in time.
Man City 3-2 QPR (2011-12)
Undoubtedly the craziest ending to both a Premier League game and Premier League season ever. Albeit Michael Thomas’ winner for Arsenal at Anfield in 1989 is better but football started in 1992 didn’t it?
With only a win at home against relegation-threatened QPR needed to win a first title in 44 years, “Cityitis” struck with a one-goal lead thrown away and Roberto Mancini’s side trailing going into added time.
Edin Dzeko gave them hope with an equaliser before that Aguero goal. The contrast in emotions for the blue and red sides of Manchester made for incredible television as Man City were crowned champions in the most dramatic of circumstances.
