How to watch the Championship online in the UK

A new rights deal came into effect in the 2024-25 EFL season, when Sky agreed to stream selected matches on their Sky Sports+ platform.

It was a five-year agreement which allows fans to watch games in the Championship, League One, League Two, Carabao Cup and Vertu Trophy.

The 3pm Saturday blackout, established back in the 1960s, means Championship games can not be streamed in the UK at that time.

Sky Sports+, via the Sky Sports app, is built into your existing Sky Sports subscription and is not a separate purchase, so you don’t need to pay extra.

Why aren’t all Championship games streamed live in the UK?

Sky Sports offer over 1,000 EFL matches across a season. But they have an agreement in place that they can show a set number of Championship games.

This is mainly due to the ‘blackout rule’ in the UK, which prevents matches from being shown in the UK between 2:45pm and 5:15pm on a Saturday.

The policy was brought into effect more than 60 years ago, to encourage fans to attend lower league games in person.

Fans have numerous other ways though that they can keep up to speed with how their teams are getting on, without being at the game. That includes audio commentary on the EFL’s iFollow service and through BBC local radio.

Upcoming changes to Championship broadcasting

The current EFL streaming deal started 16 months ago and is due to run until the end of the 2028-29 campaign.

More early kick-offs, generally at 12:30 on a Saturday, means Sky Sports are able to stream more Championship matches than ever before.

All midweek Championship matches are also able to be streamed on the Sky Sports+ service.

Although VPNs are perfectly legal to use in the United Kingdom, using one to access 3pm kick-offs or any other matches that aren’t licensed for UK broadcast is not recommended. Doing so bypasses both the blackout and the rights agreements of the streaming platforms involved, meaning you would be breaking their terms of service. This can result in your account being restricted, suspended, or permanently blocked if detected.
