Having already claimed the EFL Cup in February at the expense of Newcastle in the final, Erik ten Hag will be eyeing up a domestic double in his maiden campaign to really endear himself to the Old Trafford faithful early on in his tenure. Pep Guardiola has surprisingly only won the FA Cup once in his Manchester City career — doing so in 2018/19 — so there’s major incentive for him to add to his already-bulging trophy collection.

Manchester United are one of only two clubs with double-digit wins in the FA Cup (12), sitting just two below record holders Arsenal (14), so they will be desperate to increase their tally and close in on their north London counterparts. City meanwhile sit on six triumphs, winning their first in 1904 — before both Arsenal and Manchester United — so Guardiola has a job on his hands to bump those numbers up.

His path to Wembley has been anything but a cakewalk — but it surprisingly got easier as the rounds progressed (on paper at least). His City side had to overcome Chelsea and Arsenal in the first and second round respectively, before taking down three Championship teams in an unconventional route. Man Utd, by contrast, have faced four Premier League clubs, including Brighton, whom they edged on penalties in last month’s semi-final. This is also step two of Man City’s quest for the Treble, famously only ever won once more by a men’s team in England — Man Utd in 1998/99.

Manchester City vs Manchester United match stats

When these two clubs met in January, Man Utd claimed a 2-1 triumph, which meant they won a Manchester derby at Old Trafford after drawing 0-0 at half-time for the first time in Premier League history. Incredibly, Man City had just one shot on target in that game, their joint-fewest in a Premier League match under Pep Guardiola.

It was also the first time City had opened the scoring after half-time and then gone on to lose a Premier League match since August 2013 (2-3 vs Cardiff City). Alejandro Garnacho also became the youngest player to provide an assist in the Manchester derby in the Premier League. So plenty of firsts back in January.
